Please introduce yourself and your artwork to the world of Tumblr!
Hello my name is Orlando Sanchez and you can find my work at www.sanchezart.tumblr.com. My body of figurative work explores capturing the essence of beauty as well as playing with color and abstract design. I titled this series the beauty collection.

What fascinates you the most about the female body?
The attitude. More specifically, it’s the confidence in sexuality, sensuality and self,when it radiates from the model’s very being. I particularly enjoy being able to capture that moment and interpreting it through my illustrations. A picture of their figure can tell you an entire story of what she might be like and what she might be communicating with her body. When I paint their figure I paint a story not only for the viewer’s visual satisfaction but to allow them to explore the more subtle nuances of the girl’s expression.That is what fascinates me the most, playing a part in expressing a unique story of their figure.

Could you tell us something more about the process of creating? In your opinion, which part is the most essential?
The process relates directly to “why” I create, which is to express the experience I gain from every little thing that fascinates me. For example, when I go hiking at the Greenbelt in Austin, I could be at the top of a giant bolder peering off into the distance witnessing the vibrant colors of the sunset affect those of all the hills, streams, and greenery around. I then feel the need to incorporate that color scheme and atmosphere into the work that I have back in the studio. Instead of getting all my photo references of female figures online; I enjoy the process of meeting the models, getting to know them, and collaborating on a photo shoot that will inspire to create a series of paintings. The most important part of the process is me simply utilizing those experiences into the work.

How important are colors in an artwork?
This may sound a little strange because I put so much emphasis on color in my work, but I find Value is the most important thing in constructing an image. If my values are spot on, then I am able to explore different ways of using those colors, because the Value is the very thing that holds the piece together. That being said I still find color to be very important to me, more particularly very saturated color, which is contrary to what I was taught in college, “Don’t use the paint straight out of the tube”. I consider Color to be another layer of aesthetics that you can put in your artwork, like drawing and composition. You can consider Color as another tool in your toolbox to enhance your artwork.

Which is more vital for you: motivation or inspiration?
Motivation!!! Chuck Close said it best in a documentary called “Wisdom” by Andrew Zuckerman, “Inspiration is for amateurs, the rest of us just show up and get to work.” I have found being inspired is a fleeting feeling that I personally don’t depend on in order to create work. However, Motivation is a general desire to do something. My main motivation for the series I’m working on is to capture beauty. With that in mind, I can go in the studio everyday and figure out “how I’m going to capture beauty today?” Sure, I’ll be I’ll be inspired during that process, but the inspiration came from knowing my motivation and working through it.

If you had to move to another country.. Where would you move and why?
My plans for continuing the Beauty Collection, is to capture the beauty of women from all over the world as I am travelling. I most definitely want to start in Spain. Spain has a number of artists there with a very similar body of work as mine. Conrad Roset and Chamo San have been working on their own beautiful women series. I hear the people and the scenery in Barcelona are incredibly breath taking. I would love to immerse myself with their rich culture, especially with dancing, and explore every corner that the country has to offer.
